ESG: Environmental, Social, and Governance

ESG, at its core, is about corporate sustainability and an organization’s ongoing interaction with, and impact on, their environment, community and people. At ELM Consulting, we pride ourselves on being sustainable in more ways than one. The word sustainability leads us to think about green and clean energy, but a sustainable business is one that is protected from a myriad of risks, and has the ability to be resilient in times of crisis and drastic change. Creating a comprehensive ESG plan and framework is a proven way to protect your business, make steps towards a secure economic future, and have a greater understanding of your company’s qualitative and quantitative data points.

Environmental — Doing Good for the Earth

The Environmental pillar of ESG is all about minimizing both your energy usage and the impact of that usage on the environment in order to promote a healthier planet. This pillar gets the most mainstream attention and looks easier to complete than it seems. A large portion of the Environmental pillar is the collection and analysis of data points for energy usage, greenhouse gas emission, water usage, and waste production. Companies should identify areas where there is over-consumption and over-production, and work to create solutions with a net-neutral or positive impact on the environment. Many utilities offer energy incentive programs to encourage building owners and developers to make improvements in the overall efficiency of their buildings. These upfront incentives not only cover the upfront incremental costs, but also lead to thousands of dollars in operational savings throughout the life of a building. Finally, local, state and federal regulations are increasingly forcing organizations to follow strict guidelines when it comes to limiting emissions and waste, in addition to creating systems to allow for tracking and reporting of this data. Creating your ESG plan now will put your company ahead of the curve.

Social — Being Good to Your People

The Social pillar of ESG focuses on how you treat your people both internally and in the broader community. Within an organization, social responsibility centers around your employees and their well-being. From attracting and retaining top talent, offering competitive compensation and benefits, and being cognizant of both physical and mental health, internal social responsibility is critical for companies of all sizes.  Implementing employee wellness programs is a great start to improving your employees work-life balance. Here, direct feedback can be your barometer for success. You want your people to be passionate about their work and enjoy their workplace. There are many avenues a company can explore to create a healthy and comfortable space for improved wellbeing including mindfulness of nutrition, physical activity and mental health.

Externally, an organization’s social responsibility pertains to how one interacts with and benefits their community. Here, community can be defined as either the geographic area in which you operate or the customers and clients you touch with your product or service. Sponsorships, employee volunteer days, and giving days are all fantastic ways to engage with and give back to your community. Building off of community impact is responsible sourcing. Products come from all over the world, and you want to make sure you are being conscious of where, who, and how you are getting your products.

Governance — Conscientious Standards

The Governance pillar of ESG relates to an organization’s diversity of backgrounds among leadership and the policies put in place that lead to business decisions. It aims to provide a company’s stakeholders with transparency and insight into its operations. Mainly this pillar looks at executive and employee compensation rates, board diversity and experience, and overall access to governing documents.  The best way to revamp your governance policies is by going back to your roots. Be sure to have a clear mission statement and broadcast it to your key players. Revist and solidify your company values and guiding principles. While this may seem daunting, you probably have the majority of these pieces in place and an ESG consultant can help put a bow on your policies and get your governance documents in order.
